October 8, 2003 Wednesday
We were relieved this morning when Paige's WBC count came back at 5,300.  That meant that todays stem cell collection was a go.  They ran the apheresis machine for about four hours today, finishing at 4 p.m.  With the help of benadryl Paige slept through the entire process.  After talking with the doctors and physician assistant,  we found that they want at least 2 million stem cells and will continue to collect daily until they achieve that number.  Last Thursday, the only day they were able to collect because of her low WBCs, they collected only 10,000 stem cells.  While we won't know exact numbers until the lab is finished processing the collection later this evening, the nurse felt today was more successful.  They plan to collect tomorrow and maybe even Friday.  We just have to wait and see.  'Hurry up and wait' seems to be the story of our lives lately.
Since Grandma stayed with Paige the last few nights,  Andy and I were able to get some good sleep. The Med Inn, a hotel located in the hospital, is only a few minute walk from her room.  While there's always one of us with Paige, it's very convenient to have our own room so close.
Prior to the collection today we spent time in the playroom and at the playground, which is located on the roof of our building.  Very nice we must add.  We've taken some great pictures with our new digital camera and will add them to the site when be get home.  Andy will return to work on Friday and work throughout the weekend.  One of our friends,  Teresa, who works here in the Trauma-Burn Unit, will take Andy home when she gets off work in the morning.  Thanks for saving us a round trip home!  As soon as we find out anything new tomorrow we'll be sure to update everyone.  Have a good night.

Love,
Andy, Sandi & Paige
