| April 20, 2004 Tuesday Day +46 of Transplant Day 4 Post-op Sorry there wasn't an update yesterday. When I finally found the time to sit down and update I was so tired I could barely stay awake. The last few days have been a bit frustrating. As we mentioned on day 2 post-op Paige had an increase in her WBCs and a temperature. We felt at that point she needed a work-up to rule out any type of infection. We mentioned it to surgery, but they seemed to think it was related to the surgery itself. At that point we felt that Paige was being treated as just a surgical patient and that they weren't considering the fact that she was 46 days post stem cell transplant. To make a long story short, blood cultures were finally ordered yesterday and came back positive (gram negavie rods in both ports of her line as well as a peripheral stick...not a surprise to us), then her primary care was transfered from the surgery service back to her transplant doctors. Don't get me wrong, we're more than pleased with the way surgery went. But, we're very relieved that Paige's medical management will be handled by the appropriate service, that being oncology. I really don't think I need to say more :) Overall Paige had a pretty good day. While her appetite is not completely back to normal, she's at least trying some solid foods. Her belly remains a bit distended (swollen), but with the procedure she had that's to be expected. By this afternoon she was tired of being in bed and was ready to get up and walk. She walked a bit in the hall and spent an hour or so in the playroom. Considering the extent of her surgery we feel she's recovering well. It's just so amazing how quickly kids recover compared to adults. One of the nurse practitioners who followed Paige through transplant came to see Paige today. I said to her, "Doesn't she look great!" She just shook her head a smiled, "She's a miracle." We agree. Thanks for all of your continued love, prayers and support Love, Andy, Sandi & Paige |
